ACC and Personal Insurance Serve Different Purposes

ACC is New Zealand's no-fault accident-compensation scheme. It responds broadly to injury from accidents, and provides earnings-related weekly compensation, treatment and rehabilitation cover — subject to its own eligibility rules and limits.

Personal insurance responds to things ACC generally does not — most illnesses (cancer, cardiovascular events, strokes), long-term income loss from non-accident causes, and financial provision on death or serious diagnosis. The two are designed to complement each other, not replace one another. Cover, definitions and eligibility vary by policy — talk to us for how they fit your circumstances.

ACC
Where ACC typically responds
Accident injury — workplace, sport, motor-vehicle, medical treatment injury — with earnings-related weekly compensation and rehabilitation, subject to ACC's rules.
Where personal insurance typically responds
Illness (cancer, cardiovascular, stroke), long-term income loss from non-accident causes, private medical costs and lump-sum provision on death or serious diagnosis.

Common Questions

Personal Insurance FAQs

What personal insurance do I need in New Zealand?

It depends on your situation, but most New Zealanders should consider life insurance, health insurance, income protection, and trauma (critical illness) cover. ACC covers accidents, but not illness, redundancy, or non-accident-related disability.

What is the difference between ACC and personal insurance?

ACC covers accidental injury only. Personal insurance covers everything ACC doesn't — illness, cancer, heart attacks, strokes, and non-accident disability. If you can't work due to illness, ACC won't pay. Income protection and trauma cover fill this gap.

How much does personal insurance cost in NZ?

Premiums vary based on your age, health, occupation, and the level of cover you choose. A healthy 35-year-old might pay $80-$200/month for a comprehensive package. We compare options across multiple insurers to find suitable, competitive value for your situation.

Can I get health insurance if I have a pre-existing condition?

Yes, in most cases. Some conditions may be excluded or have a stand-down period, but many insurers will still offer cover. We work with multiple health insurers to find a suitable option for your circumstances.

How do I know if my current personal insurance is adequate?

Complete our free Personal Insurance Fact Finder online — it takes 3-5 minutes and gives us a clear picture of your situation. We'll then review your existing cover and recommend any changes needed.
